Penalties prove costly in Wolverines loss to Millionaires

An early major penalty to the Warman Wolverines’ top scorer set the tone for a tough night as the Melville Millionaires rolled to a 6-1 victory on Tuesday night in Melville.

Trey Markus was assessed a five-minute major and a game misconduct for kneeing after a hit on Melville’s Kohen Volk 3:47 into the contest and the Millionaires scored twice on the ensuing power play to grab a lead they would not relinquish as they snapped Warman’s six-game winning streak.

The pivotal play came as Volk was skating the puck out from behind his own net. Markus lined him up for a hit but wound up making knee-on-knee contact, and as Volk was helped to the bench, the Warman forward was sent to the locker room.

Preston Baerwald and Keil Schmalz each scored on the subsequent man advantage and that was only the start for the Melville power play. Later in the frame, Cole Brown cashed in with Oliver Nottingham in the box for roughing, then just over two minutes later with Ezekiel Lambert serving a roughing minor, Brown struck again to put Melville in front 4-0 after one period.

It was déja vu to begin the second as Wolverines captain Owen Parks was whistled for interference and Brown completed a natural hat trick with the Millionaires’ fifth power play goal of the night.

Warman got on the board a few minutes later as Nottingham buried a wraparound for his second goal of the season, but any hope that it would spark another big second period rally by the Wolverines was snuffed out by a Kale Margolis goal for Melville to make it a 6-1 game.

There was no scoring in the third as the Millionaires secured their sixth straight home win and sixth in their last seven games overall. With the win, Melville moved into a tie with the Weyburn Red Wings for top spot in the Bunge Division at 10-4-0-1.

Warman’s first loss since Oct. 9 dropped the Wolverines to 11-3-0-2. Despite Tuesday’s setback they still sit first overall in the SJHL and will now look to regroup as they prepare to visit the Flin Flon Bombers for a pair of games on Friday and Saturday at the Whitney Forum.

Friday’s game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Saskatchewan time. Listen to every Wolverines game live on SaskNow.com.
