Local golf courses ready for opening weekend

Apr 28, 2022 | 8:00 AM

The grass is trimmed and the sun should be shining this weekend as golf courses around the area tee off for the first time this spring.

North Battleford Golf and Country Club

North Battleford Golf and Country Club will be the first of the local courses to open on Friday, Apr. 29 at 10:00 a.m.

Director of Golf, Dana Johnson, said other than the odd challenge provided by Mother Nature, season preparations have come along smoothly with opening day now just around the corner.

“It’s been great; it’s been a bit of a challenge with the big winds – that’s one of the issues with getting tarps off and things ready for the spring – but Grant and his crew will do a great job and have it all ready to go for Friday,” Johnson said.

Among the lone adjustments for the course this year, NB Golf and Country will keep their 10-minute tee-off intervals – first implemented during the pandemic – as Johnson said it “just makes for a better flow of play.”

Due to some cooler than normal overnight lows, the pro shop will open at 8:00 a.m., with tee-times beginning at 9:00 a.m. opening week, with things expected to revert to an 8:00 a.m. tee-time start the following week forward.

Jackfish Lodge Golf Course

Jackfish Lodge Golf Course will also open this weekend, April 30, at 10:00 a.m.

Manager, Kyle Kellgren said despite a bit more snow than last year this winter, the bulk of it came earlier making for even above-average course conditions to open the year.

“I think we just had a year where we had a lot of snow early and then didn’t have a lot of freeze and thaw early, which tends to get the water onto the ground, then turns into ice and kills the grass,” he said. “So we had a very good winter and lots of snow, so the moisture is fantastic and we’re looking to have a good start.”

Kellgren said while the pandemic restrictions may be over, the club will still keep their extra cleaning measures in place for the benefit of the public.

“We’re going to continue with cart cleaning, extra sanitizing and that sort of thing,” he said. “We’ll have a few sanitizing stations inside people can use, as I think that’s just the new normal, so we’ll do our part by making sure the area’s clean for everybody.”

Rustic Nine Golf Course Par 3

Rustic Nine Golf Course will open on May 10.

Owner, Elaine Liebaert, said while they generally target an early-May opening, due to a bit of snow still on the course, they’ve opted to give it an extra week or so.

“We usually aim for the beginning of May, but this year with lots of snow, we still have some snowbanks out there, so we’re going to hold off, let the course green up a bit and then we plan to open for May 10,” she said.

Liebaert said with many having already inquired about the course’s opening date, it looks to be another strong year on the greens at the local Par 3.

“We’ve had a number of calls already, so people are getting anxious to get out there, and hopefully we’ll be good to go for the 10th, so long as the weather cooperates, and we’re excited for another great season.”
