Ahenakew to face Golden Gloves champion

May 6, 2022 | 2:00 PM

Cole Ahenakew will be going toe-to-toe Saturday night with a man who in the words of his own coach, represents his stiffest challenge to date.

The main event of the South Saskatchewan Classic in Leader features Ahenakew versus Calgary’s Yuol Chagai (20-9). Among Chagai’s accolades is winning provincials, and he is also a golden, silver and bronze glove champion.

When paNOW met with Ahenakew earlier this week, he expressed that he feels ready and is not feeling any pressure.

“The better fighters I fight, the better I fight,” he explained “I want a better challenge because every time I’m challenged, I level up.”

Ahenakew, in his own right, has been on quite the roll. He was named the Elite fighter at a Calgary event, and also won gold at provincials. Now heading into his 10th fight, Ahenakew said he’s been working on his movement and his power.

“I’m gonna make sure I have fun this time. A lot of times I was stressing but I can feel a big momentum change with this fight and I’ve having a lot more fun training now,” he said.

While referring to Ahenakew’s opponent as the full meal deal, Red Wolf Boxing coach Braddoch Koch remain confident in his fighter’s ability.

“I have every confidence that Cole will not only stand up to him, but beat him,” Koch said, adding even if Ahenakew does well [in Leader] he’s pretty much set.

Acknowledging some of the attention Ahenakew has already been getting, Koch confirmed he did turn down an invite to go to a national competition in Calgary at the end of the month. He explained he wants to progress slowly in manageable gulps.

“I thought that’s too big of a jump right now,” he said. “We’ll go next year.”

Other local fighters on the Leader card this weekend are 16-year-old Luke Kalmakoff and 14-year-old Lukas Tamayo, who are also coming off wins at provincials.

The event this weekend takes place at the Leader Community Hall. Door open at 6 p.m., and fights starts at 7 p.m.
