Melfort RCMP seeing no difference in amount of criminal calls over past year

May 12, 2022 | 8:00 AM

Melfort isn’t seeing an increase or decrease in criminal offences.

From April 1, 2021, to March 31, 2022, RCMP received 957 calls for different situations like assault, theft, and fraud. Not everyone of these calls ended with charges.

The previous 12 months saw them receive the exact same number of calls. Their operating year starts every April 1.

Sexual assaults were done as RCMP investigated 11 calls in the last year, compared to 36 in the previous year. Break and enters also saw a drop as there were 34 incidents, down from 58.

The two offences that saw the biggest yearly increase were harassment and mischief.

Harassment calls, which also included those who uttered threats, were at 74. In the previous year, there were 58.

RCMP ended up responding to 158 mischief calls, significantly higher than the 98 they investigated previously.

Neither year saw a homicide within city limits. There was a double murder on the James Smith Cree Nation which is still within the RCMP’s jurisdiction.

Meanwhile, the RCMP continues to receive a lot of mental health calls.

There were 127 in the past 12 months and 107 in the previous year. It’s believed the COVID-19 pandemic continues to play a part in the high volume.
