Parking concerns raised for proposed daycare

A development permit was given for a new daycare after questions regarding potential parking issues were resolved.

City councillors wondered how the parents of up to 20 children would be able to park at the old Lucy Baker School site without causing issues.

Director of Planning, Craig Guidinger, explained that the number of children depends on their age.

“It could be as little as four infants or it could be as many as 20 children. That is up to the agency responsible along with the ministry,” he said.

Councillor Dennis Ogrodnick said when it was an alternate high school, the building accommodated three staff and the students who attended.

He also pointed out that the gymnastics facility and church nearby do not have conflicting busy times as far as traffic goes.

“It is going to be well used. It’s a good building, it’s good to see someone came forward to set up this so I fully support this,” Ogrodnick said.

The application for the daycare states that the operators will take in children ages 18 months to 12 years old.

At the moment, the building is being used as a residence but has been offered for sale.

Council was unanimous in their vote to allow the permit to proceed.
