Best of Battle West ready for track provincials

The top track and field athletes from the Battle West District will make their way to Regina this weekend for provincials, June 3–4.

The Battlefords will be well-represented at the provincial meet, with just under 40 athletes between John Paul II Collegiate (JPII) and North Battleford Comprehensive High School (NBCHS) among those making the trip to represent the district on the provincial stage.

JPII (who will see 17 athletes advance) and North Battleford Comprehensive High School (who will have 19) finished first and second in overall points at the recent district meet, while Hafford Central took home the Kirkpatrick Award, given to the school that has the highest average finish (total points divided by total athlete enrollment).

NBCHS senior, Kobie Anderson is one of four from the high school who will be competing in the senior ranks for Battle West at provincials.

Running in the 100-metre, 200-metre and 4×100 relay, Anderson said he’s ‘confident in [his] abilities’ heading in to the weekend, and most looking forward to seeing the other competition that will be in attendance in Regina.

Among those making their first trip to provincials will be JPII’s Matteo Miedema, a Grade 9 student who finished first in intermediate boys’ 100-metre, 200-metre, long jump and 400-metre. He called being able to compete provincials ‘something special.’

“Just qualifying for provincials was a huge accomplishment I feel like,” Miedema said. “Especially with it being my first time doing track and field at districts, so I’m super excited. Heading to provincials, I’m just trying to do my best and I feel like I’ll be happy, no matter the turnout, just to be going.”

Another North Battleford athlete competing is fellow JPII freshman, Sophie Pyle, who took home first in intermediate girls’ triple jump, and second in 100-metre, 200-metre and 800-metre.

Pyle said she too is looking forward to the experience, that should only be of benefit for the coming years.

“I’m really excited because I never actually thought I could make it this far in track, and being this young making it to provincials is really cool,“ Pyle said. “I’m just hoping to learn a lot from other people and things, so then hopefully if I get to come back next year I’ll be able to do so with more experience.”
