Broncos raking in the acquisitions ahead of August fall camp

The Humboldt Broncos have been adding to their 2022/23 roster this past week.

Two new names have been added to the list while one familiar face will be back on the ice.

Brett Mirwald, a 2003-born goaltender from Saskatoon will once again be donning the green and gold jersey for the upcoming season.

He was a sixth-round draft pick of the Humboldt Broncos back in 2018 and suited up for two games during the Broncos’ 2019/20 season.

Mirwald played 19 games with the Moose Jaw Warriors of the Western Hockey League (WHL) before being traded in January 2022 to the Nanaimo Clippers of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL), then again to the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s (MJHL) Waywayseecappo Wolverines.

“We’re very excited to have Brett back in a Broncos’ Jersey,” said head coach and general manager Scott Barney. “We feel he can be a top-tier goalie in the SJHL. He’s shown it in the past in his brief time here playing with the guys, and he was great with the Moose Jaw Warriors a couple of years ago in the WHL bubble.”

Also acquired by the Broncos was 2003-born forward Jace Benvie. The Calgary product comes to Humboldt from the Albert Junior Hockey League’s (AJHL) Sherwood Park Crusaders.

He just completed his junior season where he put up 10 points in 47 games combined playing with the Crusaders and the Blackfalds Bulldogs.

During his minor hockey career, Benvie earned 36 points in 31 games in U18 AAA and a 34-point performance in 32 games as the captain of his U16 AAA team.

Adding another forward to the list, the Broncos acquired 2002-born Ben Kotylak of the BCHL’s Nanaimo Clippers this week as well.

The North Vancouver, B.C. product, split the past season between the AJHL’s Calgary Canucks, and the Clippers. The 20-year-old picked up 13 points; eight goals and five assist, in 30 games with Calgary, before adding another seven points; four goals and three assists, in 29 games with Nanaimo.

“His experience going to the league finals in the BCHL is a huge asset, and the first thing you notice about him is his speed which is an intangible we love to add on our team,” added Barney. “We believe he will be able to help us in many facets of the game including regaining his offensive touch,.”

The Broncos also got a new defenceman last month as they added Lucas Perry.

The 2004-born Edmonton product is coming from the CAC Canadians U18 AAA team where he finished the year with 10 points; four goals and six assists, in 37 games.

Perry impressed the coaching staff at the spring camp back in April, said Barney.

“Lucas is a smooth-skating d-man who we feel has a ton of upside to his game in all aspects.”

The Broncos have also made some trade transactions ahead of the SJHL draft coming up next week. The Broncos have traded three overall draft picks to the La Ronge Ice Wolves; 13th, 23rd, and 59th, for their sixth overall pick.

The draft will begin at 10 a.m. on June 10 and will feature six rounds of players born in 2006 and two rounds of players born in 2007. The draft order is decided in reverse order of regular-season standings.
