Police warn of another scam in Saskatchewan

Another scam is making the rounds in Saskatchewan.

According to the Saskatoon Police Service’s Economic Crime Section, the scam starts with a computer pop-up window or phone call claiming the victim’s computer or device has been hacked and telling them they need to do something to stop it.

In a media release, police said the scammers were targeting seniors.

The scammer, who claims to be from the police or from some other authority, tells the victim they need to withdraw or transfer funds to protect themselves from the hack. The victim is then told to pay the fraudsters via Bitcoin, pre-paid cards or bank transfer.

Police reminded the public that authorities will never demand payment in Bitcoin or gift cards, and will never tell people to move funds to protect themselves.

“Any concerns about the security of financial accounts should be discussed with the financial institution prior to removing or transferring funds,” the police said in a media release.
