It was a great day to hit the hardwood at North Battleford’s Sakewew High School, as the school kicked off Day 1 of their 20th Anniversary Alumni Basketball Series.

A two-day event that will resume again tomorrow from 1-4 p.m., the basketball series offers a chance for alumni and current players from both the senior and junior teams to come together for a couple of days catching up and enjoying the game of basketball.

Dakota Caron is a senior at the high school, and said it was a fun first day of the event.

“They just set up a little basketball tournament for us just to have some fun and enjoy the rest of the year and it’s been great,” Caron said, catching a quick breather between games. “I actually just started here and got offered to play for fun, so I’m just having some fun today.”

To keep both the current and alumni players involved and active, the tournament features an interwoven format between the alumni and current teams’ games, switching off between playing and resting between each quarter.

Alumni, Tyrese Moccasin is just a few years removed from graduating from the high school, as part of the class of 2020. He said he’s enjoyed the tournament so far, returning to the gym where he played as part of the high school team, and catching up with some old friends.

“It feels good; I like being out here, and it’s been fun,” Moccasin said, adding that it was also cool to reunite with his former teammate from high school, Justin Brabant who also suited up for the alumni team.

At the other end of things, just starting out his high school experience is Grade 9, Zaden Bugler, who has happy to be out there competing and having some fun with friends.

“We’re just having some fun today with all the boys at the gym and it’s been some pretty good basketball going on,” Bugler said with a smile. “I’ve seen a lot of faces and some pretty good players too, so I just hope everyone has a good day.”

Tournament action will resume tomorrow, June 7, again running from 1-4 p.m. at the high school gymnasium.
