Carpenter class to hold Burger Fundraiser for Humane Society

Carpenter High School’s Grade 9 Health Class will be manning the grill out front of the high school today, June 15, over the lunch hour, from 11:45–1:15 p.m.

Holding a special Burger Fundraiser with proceeds going to the Meadow Lake Humane Society, health teacher, Cheyne Dallyn, said the project serves as a practical way for the students to put their volunteering and service learning into practice that benefits the community.

“Instead of just talking about volunteering and talking about the impact of the community, these students have to go through the process of creating events and then making that event come into fruition,” Dallyn said.

“The students have had to do all the planning, they’ve had to do the organizing, the social media, and get the word out there, so it’s all student-run and I just kind of direct them and help them where they need it. It’s the students’ choice in what they want to do and raise money for.”

He added that with a number of students in the class passionate about helping animals, it was no surprise to see them land on the Humane Society as this semester’s cause.

The students will be selling burgers, drinks, and chips with meal deals available for $7.

Dallyn said just seeing the students come together to make the event possible has been a great experience for all involved.

“The leadership has been awesome,” he said. “Seeing different students take leadership roles in this process has been really cool and just their amazing ideas and willingness to chip in and help wherever they can. We had different groups spearhead different projects with it, so their ability to jump in and help one another has been great to see.”
