Lake Lenore Heatwave returning after two-year hiatus

After two years without their beloved annual event, the community of Lake Lenore will finally be able to part take in their Heatwave.

And because they’ve had to wait longer than usual, the town will be hosting more festivities, which will include their Homecoming, in conjunction with St. Anthony’s Parish 100 year anniversary.

According to Committee Chair Scott Lessmeister, the point of the homecoming is to bring back the ‘town alumni.’

“You’re involving former members of the community, people who grew up here, but no longer live here. It keeps those ties strong. Not just the people who are currently living in this community, but the people that grew up here and had their formative years here. When they come back, that helps build community pride and community spirit as well.”

The three-day celebration will begin this Friday, July 8, starting at 7 p.m., with a welcome reception and social at their community hall.

It will then move on from there with a parade, pancake breakfast, bunnock and spikeball tournament, kids activities, beer gardens, concession, farmers market and vendor event, 50/50 buckets and raffles, digital history display, family photos, pork loin supper, dance and fireworks at the sports grounds and community hall on Saturday.

The contest will then wrap up Sunday morning with a mass, pancake breakfast, and pipe organ concert.

He also told northeastNOW that an event like this isn’t possible without the support of the community, adding how it will bring people together.

“When you put on something, this size, it really takes it’s a community effort. So, you know, it really involves a lot of community members, you need a lot of help.”

“The community building that it creates, because, you know, whenever you have a big group of people that come together to work to put something like this on, it just creates a lot of team spirit and a lot of community spirit, so that’s a good thing too.”

The event, which will cost between 25 and 65 dollars (depending on age and date of ticket purchase), will be used as a fundraiser, with all proceeds going towards community facility initiatives, which include the skating rink, the hall, and the bowling alley.

He also mentioned his thanks to the volunteers who have worked and will continue to work, to make sure this weekend is a success.

“Volunteerism is a critical aspect of any small community, just to keep everything going. Lake Lenore has always been very strong with people volunteering and this weekend we’re going to have dozens and dozens of people helping out because that’s what’s required. When you host 500 or more guests, you need all hands on deck. Lake Lenore has always been strong in that respect.”
