Borden track star wins hurdles gold at Summer Games

A local track athlete won gold at the Canada Summer Games.

Borden’s Savannah Sutherland finished first in the 400m hurdles at Canada Games Park on Friday. The 19-year-old spoke about being proud to represent Saskatchewan in her win during media availability at the Games.

“I’m really proud to represent the province, we’re one of the smaller provinces and this just proves we can go out there and compete with all the bigger ones too,” she said in a release. “So, I’m really proud of that.”

The gold medal is the first of the Games for Team Saskatchewan, bring the medal total to 19. Harvey Weber, her coach, also expressed pride in her performance.

“Today was unbelievably exciting, it’s our first gold medal,” he said. “She is an outstanding athlete and person and deserves that gold medal, more than anybody else!”

Sutherland attends the University of Michigan in the United States and has won international hardware as well. This year alone she won gold at the Canadian National Championships, the World U20 Championships, after winning bronze at the 2021 World U20 Chamapionships.

“Savannah is an elite athlete, she was just in Columbia a month ago representing Canada in the 400m hurdles and she knows how to put her game face on and pull off an incredible performance,” Weber said. “She’s done just that at the Canada Games for Team Sask and we’re all so proud of her.”

There’s still competition ahead for Sutherland at the Summer Games, as she is part of the 4x400m relay female medal heat this afternoon at 4:15 p.m. EST.
