Blades shut down Raiders comeback hopes in overtime, escape PA with 4-3 win

The Prince Albert Raiders nearly came back from two goals down to come from behind and stun their highway 11 rivals, but a lucky bounce for the Saskatoon Blades helped them squeak past PA 4-3 in overtime.

After a great first period by PA, a plethora of penalties for the Raiders troubled their second period and gave the Blades plenty of time to build a lead. And build a lead they did, scoring two of their three second period goals on the powerplay.

When asked about the teams discipline in Friday’s contest, head coach Jeff Truitt said that he was unhappy with his teams performance.

“I didn’t like it,” he said. “We took some unnecessary penalties and they got some life out of it. However, I thought we did a good job on battling back and getting us back to 3-3.”

Raider rookie Justice Christensen had himself a night, scoring twice to collect his first career preseason goals which helped him earn the games first star.

“The first one felt pretty good,” he said. “The second one also felt good to tie it up in the third, I was pretty happy about that one.”

Trevor Thurston also lit the lamp in the contest, while Terrell Goldsmith, Hayden Pakkala, Ryder Ritchie and Keaton Sorensen each collected assists.

Raiders netminder Tikhon Chaika made 18 stops on 22 shots as PA now falls to 2-1-1-0 on the preseason.

Blades goaltender Ethan Chadwick turned aside 28 shots in the win, helping Saskatoon improve to 3-1-0-0 in the preseason.

COMPLETE BOX SCORE

The Raiders got the lone first period marker by taking advantage of a first period powerplay to get the ball rolling early. A tightrope act by Pakkala and Goldsmith somehow kept the puck in the Blades end which resulted in a Christensen point-shot squeaking past the sea of bodies in-front to put PA up by one.

The second period was a very different story compared to the opening frame. Tides quickly changes at the start of the second as a slew of penalties for the Raiders proved to be costly. Back-to-back powerplay goals saw Trevor Wong slide the puck past Chaika via the five-hole and Vaughn Watterodt cleaning up the loose puck in front. Spencer Shugrue jumped in on the Blades scoring parade and got his first of the preseason as Saskatoon led 3-1 after two.

The Raiders came out of the second intermission on the right foot, tying the game just over five minutes into the third.

A scrum in front of Chadwick resulted in the puck coming out and onto the tape of Thurston who ripped it top shelf to cut the Blades lead down to one. Shortly after, Ritchie gathered the puck in the corner and sent it to the blue line where Christensen ripped a shot through the screen to net his second of the night.

Overtime was needed to settle the score and in the end, it was Lukas Hansen who won it for the Blades after batting the puck out of the air and past Chaika as Saskatoon escapes the Raiders 4-3.

It’s a quick turnaround for both teams now as they will rematch one another in Warman tomorrow night to close out the preseason.
