Prairie Dogs fall in championship game of Harvest Cup

The Prince Albert Prairie Dogs were looking to go back-to-back as they faced off with the host team Sturgis 911 in the Harvest Cup this past weekend.

However, it was the host team that scraped by in a nail-biter winning the cup by a score of 8-7.

After dropping a 7-5 decision to the Regina Southern Comfort, the team bounced back with a 10-5 win over the Saskatoon Plainsmen.

That set up a semifinal matchup with the Moose Jaw Tommy Guns, which they took 10-9.

Thanks to stellar play from their defence and goaltender, Sturgis 911 claimed the Harvest Cup over the Prairie Dogs, its first in club history.

Player and manager Matt Robin said the team worked hard but the loss still stung.

“Losing by one goal in the championship is tough, it’s a tough pill to swallow. It could have gone anybody’s way. We’re just going to keep going at the same pace, if not more, and practice even harder trying to get more guys out.”

This coming despite a not-so-ideal start to the playoff round.

“We didn’t fare too well in our first game against a team that contributed less of a challenge for us. We ended up being able to bounce back and make it first overall in the pool and make it to the final round,” Robin said. “Being able to be there back-to-back years even though we didn’t get to bring it back.”

When talking about the future, Robin pointed out they are seeing more people wanting to play field lacrosse and they hope that grows.

“The team has grown from start to finish,” Robin said. “Makes it more difficult for the other teams to play against us, they kind of don’t want to play against us or they really do because we’re a good matchup and a good challenge for people.”
