Ice Wolves return from SJHL Showcase in Warman

The Ice Wolves are back in La Ronge following the 2022 Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) Showcase in Warman.

The annual event, which runs from Sept. 25-28 at the Legends Centre, is a chance for players to compete in front of scouts from across North America. The SJHL was expecting close to 200 scouts to attend the showing, which features 12 games with each of the league’s 12 teams playing two.

Ice Wolves assistant coach Kyle Schneider explained it was a good opportunity for players to be seen.

“The SJHL did a good job of getting it on SaskTel and there are lots of media and whatnot for the players,” he said. “There’s a ton of division one, division three Canadian youth colleges scouts, they were all there. There are even some NHL teams that are there.”

On Sept. 25, the Ice Wolves faced off against the Kindersley Klippers and won the game 4-1. Ethan Strik and Walker Jerome both scored in the first period, while Hunter Burgeson earned a point in the second. Jerome scored a second goal in the third. The lone goal from the Klippers came from Matthew Mazzocchi during the first period.

The following evening the Ice Wolves fell 10-3 against the Humboldt Broncos. Four of the Broncos goals were powerplays and Schneider blamed the loss on too many penalties.

Strik took a 10-minute misconduct in the second, while Daniel Thiessen was given five minutes for fighting and a 10-minute game misconduct in the third.

“We had a good first period and decent second period, then we got into some penalty trouble and the game just got away on us,” Schneider said.

So far in the regular season, the Ice Wolves have three wins and two losses. They will play the Broncos again on Sept. 30 at the Mel Hegland Uniplex with a 7:30 p.m. puck drop.
