Raiders clash with ICE for first time since 2022 playoffs

Sep 28, 2022 | 12:00 PM

Following two tough losses last weekend to their biggest rivals in the Saskatoon Blades, the Prince Albert Raiders are back home to face a familiar foe.

The Raiders will welcome the Winnipeg ICE to the Art Hauser Centre Wednesday night for the first time since the first round of last season’s playoffs. The Raiders were defeated 5-2 in their home opener last Friday, before scraping away with a point in a 2-1 overtime defeat in Saskatoon the following day.

Winnipeg, meanwhile, opened its season last Saturday with a 4-3 overtime win over the Brandon Wheat Kings. The ICE had the best record in the Western Hockey League (WHL) last season with a 53-10-3-2 record but lost to the Edmonton Oil Kings in the conference finals.

Last season, the Raiders were 4-8-1 against the ICE, including being eliminated after Game 5 of last year’s opening round playoff series. The two teams will face each other six times this year.

In other Raider news, the team announced Wednesday they’ve released 2004-born forward Jesiah Bennett. Bennett played 42 games last season with the Brandon Wheat Kings, notching two assists.

Puck drop for Wednesday night’s game is at 7 p.m. with the pre-game show with Rob Mahon at 6:30 on 900 CKBI.
