At the same time it formally opened its new office in Prince Albert, PrairiesCan also announced a $1.6 million interest-free loan to Rise Air.

The money will help the company restore flight services to what they were before the pandemic, such as restoring Sunday services, said Rise Air spokesperson Dan Gold.

“It also means we get one step closer to the expansion of services for our communities in the north,” he said.

Cancelling Sunday flights during the pandemic was very frustrating for all parties, and restoring them helps brings operations back to normal, Gold said.

Sunday flights allow people to make doctor appointments in larger centres to the south. The company is also looking at adding new routes into new communities.

“These are the communities that own us at Rise Air, so the funding arrangement has certainly helped us it benefits us and directly helps our communities,” he said.

The new PrairiesCan office is the result of a decision last year by the federal government to split Western Economic Development with one-half focused on Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.

Seven new service locations were created, including one in Prince Albert, located in the Sask Polytech campus.

Providing the loan to Rise Air meets part of PrairiesCan’s goals, said Minister Dan Vandal, who was in Prince Albert to unveil the new office.

“It’s part of our supports for regional transportation airlines, to make sure that folks that live in the north, Indigenous communities, northern communities, are connected,” said Vandal.

At the same time the loan to Rise Air was announced, funding of just over $140,000 was announced to the City of Prince Albert for improved access to the Little Red River Park.
