Victoria Hospital pediatric unit looking to raise funds to buy new comfort items for kids

Oct 12, 2022 | 5:00 PM

Staff at the Victoria Hospital’s pediatric unit are aiming to get new comfort items for the kids they help.

They’ve created the ‘Nurse for a Day’ fundraiser, with help from the Victoria Hospital Foundation, which will see the unit’s doctors work 12-hour shifts as nurses in an attempt to raise awareness and funds.

The goal is to raise $10,000 which will be used to help buy baby swings, bouncy chairs, teddy bears, art kits, puzzles, and more.

“I think using comfort care items is a great way for the children to feel more comfortable, I’ve witnessed it a few times,” said Dr. Kimberly Bordun, family medicine resident, who spoke about the initiative in a video posted to social media.

Registered nurse Paige Burchell, who also shared her thoughts on the fundraiser in a social media video, explained these items also remind these children that despite having to get medical treatment they’re still kids.

“It really encourages kids to keep playing, keep developing, and keep learning while they’re in the hospital and that’s what I think is most important.”

This fundraiser is a first for the hospital. The idea was thought of this past summer with Taylor Gareau, a nurse in the pediatrics ward, eventually reaching out to the health foundation to see if they could help raise funds.

“It’ll be a good initiative and it’ll be really impactful for the kids and their families too,” said Cody Barnett, Executive Director of the Victoria Hospital Foundation

People who want to support the fundraiser can donate online.
