Raiders blanked in Regina against Pats

Every period was a close one in the contest between the Regina Pats and the Prince Albert Raiders Wednesday night. Unfortunately for the Raiders, all three tightly-contested periods tilted in favor of the home side.

Easton Armstrong, Tanner Howe, and Tye Spencer all scored, and Drew Sim stopped all 22 shots he faced as the Raiders fell 3-0 in Regina. Tikhon Chaika stopped 27 of 30 shots thrown his way in the loss.

Bus legs may have contributed to a slow Raiders start, as the Pats had the first several shots of the game and the first goal. A breakout pass skipped right over a Raiders stick and right to the tape of Armstrong, who broke in and wired a shot top-corner to open the scoring.

By the end of the first period, the Raiders were pushing back, taking the lead in the shots on goal department, drawing a penalty thanks to hard work by Niall Crocker and Hayden Pakkala, and moving the puck well on the ensuing power play. They were not able to solve Sim, however.

The second period started rough for the Raiders as they lost Carson Latimer to a dangerous check to the head that went uncalled. It got worse when, after Nolan Allan stopped Connor Bedard from rushing in, Howe followed up and wired one past Chaika for the 2-0 lead.

Late in the second, as they had late in the first, the Raiders pushed back hard, generating several chances from in close. Cole Peardon had one of the best chances of the middle frame, but rifled his shot just high. The 2-0 score persevered.

Early in the third, a goal mouth scramble gave Regina all the breathing room they would need. After Chaika stopped Bedard no fewer than four times on the same shift, Bedard dove for the crease and poked a puck loose. Spencer came leaping over a pile of players to bat it home to make it 3-0.

Again the Raiders had some looks late, but by then the game was simply beyond their reach. They fell 3-0 to drop to 2-5-2 on the season.

The next action for the Raiders comes on Saturday night at home against the Calgary Hitmen. Puck drop is 7:00.
