Hawks shut out by Hounds

For the first time this season, the Nipawin Hawks are on a losing streak after a 4-0 blanking courtesy of the Notre Dame Hounds Thursday at the Centennial Arena.

The Hounds scored once in the first period, twice more in the second and another goal in the third to secure their second win in Nipawin of the season. Hawks assistant coach Levi Stuart said the staff wasn’t pleased with the club’s effort.

“Things don’t come easy, you have to work hard for everything and earn every inch and I don’t think we did that tonight,” Stuart told northeastNOW after the game.

Nipawin has now been shut out twice this season including a 3-0 loss to Yorkton earlier this year at the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) Showcase. The offence has been a pleasant surprise led by Captain Maguire Ratzlaff’s SJHL leading 13 goals, but the loss was hard for Stuart to swallow coming off a blowout loss to the Humboldt Broncos last Friday.

“I think we were expecting a lot more tonight, obviously hoping for a big bounce back leading into the weekend. I think it just shows we have some work to do,” Stuart added.

Reid Lalonde took the loss in goal making 25 stops. Tucker Inabinet made 22 stops for the shutout and victory.

The Hawks have Friday off and will travel to Humboldt on Saturday to meet the second-place Broncos. Stuart said the team needs to find a solution or the losing streak could start to snowball.

“We’ll get right back to work tomorrow in practice and work on the things we saw tonight that were detrimental to us,” he concluded.

Faceoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Elgar Petersen Arena on Saturday. Rona Nipawin Hawks Hockey will be broadcasted on CJVR instead of 750 Beach Radio due to the Riders broadcast. The pregame show begins at 7:15 p.m.
