Rescued eagle deemed healthy and released back into wild

An eagle rescued earlier this week in La Loche was released back into the wild after it was determined the bird had no visible injuries.

La Loche fire chief Derek Herman was at the village’s lagoon on Monday when he came across an eagle that was on the ground and seemed to be having trouble flying. He watched the bird fly up and land again multiple times before he decided to take it home and contact an animal rescue.

“It was sitting there and kind of bending over,” Herman said. “I could see something was wrong with him.”

It’s not the first time Herman had come to the rescue of an eagle as he mentioned it was the fourth one he’s saved throughout the years. He rescued his first eagle when he was in his 20s.

“I was about 30 when I saved another one and, a few years after that, I had to save another one at Duck Pass and now again,” Herman said.

The eagle he took home earlier this week was handed over to conservation officers in Buffalo Narrows on Tuesday. It was assessed and officers determined the bird was healthy.

“The eagle was able to fly short distances and did not have any visual injuries,” a statement from the Ministry of Corrections, Policing and Public Safety noted. “The decision was made to release the bird back in the wild.”

The statement added wildlife of all kinds should be given space, respect, and in most cases, it is best wildlife is left alone. If the public has concerns about wildlife that’s suspected to be injured, they are encouraged to call local conservation officers for advice or contact the Turn In Poachers and Polluters (TIPP) line at 1-800-667-7561.
