Multi-vehicle collision causes power outage in Melfort

Oct 24, 2022 | 5:18 PM

On October 23rd, around 5 p.m., Melfort EMS and Fire responded to a multi-vehicle collision in Melfort which caused a massive power outage.

The incident happened near the Canalta Hotel, shutting down an intersection for a couple of hours.

A pickup truck was hit by a minivan, causing the truck to be put through a power pole.

The power pole snapped near the base and powerlines were down through the intersection, with one of the powerlines ending up across the truck.

The area was blocked off and traffic was diverted, while the driver of the truck stayed in their vehicle until Sask Power was able to ensure that the powerline on the truck was not energized.

Once confirmation was received from Sask Power, Melfort EMS attended to the patient in the truck who was then transported to Melfort Hospital.

City of Melfort staff responded to the scene with barricades to shut down the intersection while Sask Power replaced the pole and put the lines back in place.

None of the Emergency Responders was injured during the incident and RCMP has investigated.

According to Sask Power, all power was restored shortly after 7 p.m., as the accident affected a total of 1,776 customers.
