Air Ronge reallocates $50,000 to address Heritage Trail repairs

Air Ronge council has reallocated $50,000 from the recreation budget for improvements to the Heritage Trail.

“The immediate work we have been doing is in places where it needs repairs and some upgrades,” administrator Gavin Willins said. “Our main focus is on the safety aspect of those places.”

Matt Preston of Preston Trail Consulting was hired to complete the work, which started about three weeks ago. Work is currently underway at the trail entrance by Waco Drive going outwards to Bigstone Lake, where Preston explained three boardwalks have already been replaced.

Preston noted work on the trail could continue for the next couple of weeks until freeze up.

“The focus is we want to get a few of the really poor condition boardwalks between Waco Drive and the rapids where there is a great bird-watching opportunity,” he said.

“I think there should be enough funding left over that we will then flip to the very start of the trail off the park just across from the bridge. There are one or two boardwalks there that could use a replacement as well and that will probably be the extent of it for this year,” he said.

Preston mentioned the ultimate goal is for the trail to be wheelchair accessible some day. For that to happen, he said it only makes sense to start improvements in hazardous areas or those in disrepair.

The Heritage Trail is 3.7 kilometers one way and is accessible from multiple points of entry in Air Ronge.
