Remnants of hurricane Nicole bring heavy rain to southern Quebec and Atlantic region

MONTREAL — The remnants of hurricane Nicole dumped heavy rainfall across much of southern Quebec and Atlantic Canada on Saturday.

Almost 13,000 homes and businesses in Nova Scotia were without electricity on Saturday morning. Most of the outages at that time — about 9,000 — were reported in the Halifax area, where wind gusts reached 76 kilometres per hour at the mouth of Halifax harbour.

By Saturday evening, the number of power outages in Nova Scotia had dropped to just under 1,000 homes and businesses, and about 600 were without power in New Brunswick.

Rainfall warnings were issued for most of Atlantic Canada and eastern Quebec, and snowfall warnings were in effect for parts of Newfoundland.

Environment Canada also said parts of eastern Quebec and Newfoundland would get some snow.
