Ice Wolves enjoy six-game winning streak

Nov 21, 2022 | 5:00 PM

The La Ronge Ice Wolves are on a six-game winning streak after recent back-to-back wins against the Weyburn Red Wings.

The Red Wings were in La Ronge on Nov. 18 and 19 where they fell to the Ice Wolves on both nights with scores of 6-1 and 7-1, respectively. The Ice Wolves are now in third place in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, trailing behind the Flin Flon Bombers in second and Battlefords North Stars in first.

“I thought we played really good five-on-five,” Ice Wolves Head Coach Kevin Kaminski said about the last two games. “We scored some goals five-on-five, our powerplays were pretty solid and we scored a few goals there, then our penalty kills were outstanding.”

Kaminski explained he couldn’t be prouder of his team right now. He noted players have been persevering through sickness and injuries and they are finding ways to win no matter the line up. Kaminski said it just goes to show their character, work ethic and investment into the Ice Wolves.

The Ice Wolves only have two home games left this year on Dec. 10 and 17. Their next games are against the Humboldt Broncos (Nov. 23) and the Battlefords North Stars (Nov. 24 and 25).

Although the Ice Wolves will spend a lot of time on the road in the coming weeks, Kaminski mentioned that’s not necessarily a negative because the players will be away from some of the distraction at home.

“We’re in shape. We just need rest when we need rest,” he said. “We have to go be road warriors and just keep demanding the winning ways like we have been for the last six games.”

The Ice Wolves currently have 33 points in 24 games. That consists of 16 wins, seven losses and one overtime loss.
