Hawks look for another win over Millionaires, new acquisition in lineup

The Nipawin Hawks will take on the Melville Millionaires for the second straight time Wednesday at the Centennial Arena.

On Sunday in Melville the Hawks came back in the final minute of regulation and won in overtime 3-2. Nipawin Head Coach Tad Kozun said he continues to see progress with the team’s young roster.

“Coming back and finishing the game off the way we did is a huge testament to the maturing that we are doing as a group and taking steps forward,” Kozun said ahead of the game.

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) club announced a trade on Tuesday. The Hawks acquired 19-year-old centreman Chase Visser from the Lloydminster Bobcats of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL). Kozun said the Barrhead, Alta. product made it to Nipawin Tuesday.

“He’ll be in the lineup tonight making his debut. I am looking forward to getting him into the lineup and working with him,” Kozun said.

Visser has a goal and three assists this year for Lloydminster, but Kozun hopes a change of scenery and reunion with Nipawin forward Reid McKay can spark his skillset that generated 10 goals and 23 points as an AJHL rookie.

Nipawin sent a player development fee to Lloydminster in return for Visser’s rights.

On Dec. 1 SJHL teams can have no more than 25 players signed to cards, if a team has the maximum cards signed that leaves no room to make acquisitions on Jan. 10, the national junior hockey trade deadline. The Hawks currently have 24 players on their roster.

Kozun said adding Visser makes his team better and hopes the team continues to improve.

“I think the guys have earned the right to be rewarded and I really like the way our team is trending up right now,” he said.

The second meeting of the season between Nipawin and Melville is another important one standing wise, the Hawks hold the final SJHL playoff spot three points up on the Millionaires.

Face-off is set for 7 p.m. at the Centennial Arena.
