Catholic Family Services of the Battlefords hopes for donations for ‘Snowflake Campaign’

Dec 5, 2022 | 5:23 PM

Catholic Family Services (CFS) of the Battlefords Inc. is encouraging people to donate to its Christmas Snowflake Campaign running now.

The organization offers professional counselling as well as support services to families and individuals in the Battlefords and surrounding area.

Funds from the Snowflake Campaign, that continues through December and January, will help with costs for services the agency provides, not otherwise funded by other sources.

People can make a donation to purchase a snowflake decal, and write the name of a loved one who passed away on it. The dedicated snowflake will be hung at the CFS offices in North Battleford.

“Many people do like to make a donation in memory of someone,” Executive Director Kim Morrison said. “Or you can also just make a donation and have your own name on a snowflake.”

Each snowflake donation will make a difference.

“Even though snowflakes are small, when more than one falls down, as we know in Saskatchewan, it can create quite an impact,” Morrison said.

She added people are also a lot like snowflakes in many ways too. And when they come together, they can create a positive reaction.

Demand for help high

The local CFS has been busy this year responding to the need for support in the community. It has seen a record number of people accessing help in 2022.

The non-profit provided assistance to the victims of the apartment building fire in January, helping many in need. The organization also offered help to families trying to find accommodations after they were left homeless.

“We were able to offer some staff to support people as they went through that, and also to [provide] some practical things, helping with the donations,” Morrison said. “And, helping with other community partners so we can fund [needs] like that.”

The CFS also provided support to the victims through its family services programming and services.

She said many people access the CFS services in the area.

“Here is North Battleford, there are different peaks and valleys with needs that aren’t always covered,” Morrison said. “Our youth are experiencing extra stress, [as well as] different groups in the community. So, we respond with crisis support, or by holding [various] sessions.”

The CFS has also used funds to help women as well as other individuals who are trying to recover from trauma.

“Every year there are different [services] our community needs,” Morrison said. “And the donations people bring us through the Snowflake Campaign help us to be able to respond to meet those needs.”

Morrison reminds people that Catholic Family Services (CFS) of the Battlefords is always there if they need counselling services or other support programs, especially at this time of the year.

“As always, we have some people who struggle during the holidays,” she said. “We encourage people to reach out for support. North Battleford is having a real increase in people struggling, so we always want to make sure they know they have support.”
