Showings of student drama production ‘Elf Jr.’ begin Friday

Students from Churchill Community High School and Pre-Cam Community School have teamed up to offer six showings of Elf Jr. in the coming days.

Drama club director Connie Haugen, along with Leo Delaney, Sam Jolly, and Heidi Merriman, have been busy working with students since September to get them ready to perform the play. Elf Jr. includes 20 actors with another seven students working backstage.

Elf Jr. is based on the motion picture Elf released in 2003 starring Will Ferrell. The plot follows the main character, Buddy, who crawls into Santa’s sack and is unknowingly brought back to the North Pole. Buddy grows up believing he’s an elf, but later learns he is human and travels to New York to find his father and family.

“The kids have worked really hard and it’s a really good play,” Haugen said. “It’s super cute and funny. They’ve really put a lot of hard work into it. I hope people appreciate it and come and watch. The best thing for live theatre is to have an audience.”

Students met once per week in September and gradually began rehearsing more in the lead-up to December. Haugen noted this month they have been practicing every day and have even begun dressing up to get more into their roles.

Most of the rehearsals occurred at Pre-Cam and students began using the stage at Churchill just this week. The younger students are taking on the roles of the elves, office staff, New Yorkers, and Macy’s department store employees, while the older students have the adult roles.

This is the first time the drama club has ever performed Elf Jr.

“This is new. The kids really wanted to do a Christmas play,” Haugen said.

Public showings will be held Friday at 7 p.m., Saturday at 7 p.m. (dinner theatre), Sunday at 2 p.m., and Monday at 7 p.m. There will be two additional free showings on Monday for students only.

Tickets cost $8 for the regular showings and $25 for the dinner theatre. The play is a little more than one hour in length.
