Porcupine Sr. Blues raise over $20k for Porcupine Hope Fund

The Porcupine Plain Blues senior hockey team hosted the Tisdale Ramblers this past Saturday for a special ‘Night of Hope’ game.

The contest raised money for the Porcupine Hope Fund, which supports critically ill people, in and around the area.

After raising a total of $20,466.75, team manager Duane Thorpe shared his enthusiasm and disbelief.

“The community support was huge and the generosity in this town is unbelievable,” he told northeastNOW. “You can’t do it if we didn’t have all these people come out and support us like that, that was pretty cool.”

A large portion of the funds came from the silent and live auctions, which according to Thorpe, raised over $11,000.

The game also featured raffle draws, Calcutta shootouts, and a guaranteed 50/50.

Alumni Tim Irving won the goaltender portion of the shootout and alumni Nelson Shumlanski won the shooter portion of the shootout.

There was also a $3,500 donation from the Delmer Thorpe Memorial Hockey Draft, to the Porcupine Hope Fund.

With all the success they had this year, for a fund that just began in October, Thorpe explained he hopes they can run something like this again, in 2023.

“I’m thinking it will… we’ll see what happens for next year but I’m sure it’ll be a go for sure, hopefully, it is. We’re hoping for at least one or two big fundraisers a year.”

The Hope Fund is currently going through the application process of getting all the money handed out.

According to them, they’re hoping to get it all out right after New Year’s, so they can help some people in the community and the surrounding area.

The Blues will be hosting a new years dance on Dec. 31, following their 5 p.m. game against the Hudson Bay Hunters.

Doors at the Porcupine Plain community hall will open at 8:30 p.m., with music set to be performed by the Tycke Brothers.
