Star Blanket Cree Nation to reveal ‘discovery’ at site of residential school

Jan 12, 2023 | 9:39 AM

The Star Blanket Cree Nation is to hold a media conference Thursday to discuss what it calls a “recent discovery” at the former site of the Qu’Appelle Indian Residential School near Lebret.

That town is about 80 kilometres northeast of Regina.

In a media advisory, the First Nation said Chief Michael Starr and council members are to be joined at the event by the Star Blanket Cree Nation Indian Residential School Ground Search Project Committee.

The media conference is set for 11 a.m.

The Star Blanket Cree Nation announced in November of 2021 that it was starting the search for unmarked graves at the site using ground-penetrating radar.

Similar searches on the Cowessess First Nation, the George Gordon First Nation and the Keeseekoose First Nation resulted in the discovery of a number of unmarked graves.

The searches in Saskatchewan started after the discovery in May of 2021 of the remains of 215 children buried on the grounds of a former residential school in Kamloops.
