Temperature in La Ronge expected to hit freezing mark on Sunday

Environment Canada is forecasting the temperature to hit the freezing mark on Sunday.

“We finally have a couple of weather systems moving through. They are forming in the McKenzie Valley (British Columbia) and they come down in a southeastern direction and it brings the more milder air from the Pacific associated with it,” meteorologist Terri Lang said.

“That’s where it is coming from, however, I do think we will see some snow coming along with that, so even as the temperatures warm up, we will see some snow with it. It probably won’t be too much because they tend to be fast-moving systems.”

Wednesday in La Ronge reached a high of -8 C with an overnight low of -10 C. Highs and lows on Thursday will be -5 C and -11 C, -4 C and -11 C on Friday and -3 C and -4 C on Saturday.

Although Sunday is expected to reach 0 C, the warm weather will be short-lived as the overnight low that day is -21 C. The 30-year average highs for this time of year are -15 C with overnight lows around -26 C.

Lang mentioned five to 10 centimeters of snow are expected on the weekend.

“It looks like another one will be coming through Tuesday with maybe another five to 10 centimetres, and then we will probably see the temperatures fall off because we are seeing a push of Arctic air starting to move in finally,” she said. “It has been a mild January so far.”

The weather system this weekend could also bring with it freezing rain and motorists are advised to check the Highway Hotline before heading out.
