The Nipawin Hawks have transitioned into road warriors since the turn of the new year picking up a 3-2 road win over the Melville Millionaires on Wednesday.

The win was the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) club’s fourth triumph on the road since the Christmas break. Despite the Hawks letting the Millionaires make it close in the third period, the team was satisfied with the victory at Horizon Credit Union Centre according to forward Reid McKay.

“In the third period, we can’t give up those chances, we have to play a full 60 minutes,” the 18-year-old said after the game. “Obviously clean up some stuff in the defensive zone, but overall very happy.”

Coming off a 3-2 win over Yorkton Tuesday in Wadena, the Hawks soared into Melville looking for their fifth straight victory over the Millionaires this season. Former Millionaire Maguire Ratzlaff opened the scoring in the first period with his 21st of the campaign.

The lead stood until the second period when McKay picked up a Rylan Lefebvre clearing attempt while shorthanded leading to a breakaway and Nipawin’s first goal while killing a penalty since Oct. 11. He said he had a chance last Friday against Melville for his fourth goal but was stymied by Clement Labillois, but the Irma, Alta. product made no mistake making the game 2-0.

“It feels very good, I had a chance last game against Melville actually, my last breakaway while shorthanded. I made sure I beared down on this one,” McKay said.

Joel Mabin expanded the lead with just seven seconds remaining in the second period, shovelling a rebound past Labillois for his 12th goal of the year in his 100th junior ‘A’ game.

The Hawks needed the Mabin tally, the Millionaires pushed to the end scoring twice in the third period cutting the lead to one, but the Hawks held on for their 19th win of the season.

Damon Cunningham won his second start with Nipawin making 32 stops for the victory, Labillois finished with 35 saves in the loss.

Nipawin’s schedule continues with the team’s second neutral site game of the week on Saturday when Rosetown plays host to the Hawks and the Kindersley Klippers. McKay said the Wadena experience was enjoyable for the players and the team is excited for the game in Rosetown as well.

“Small towns the barns get rowdy in there it’s nice to hear them loud. It’s awesome, little barns are it,” he concluded.

Saturday’s game will face-off at 7:30 p.m., the pregame show of Nipawin Rona Hawks Hockey on Beach Radio begins at 7:15 p.m.
