Leroux, Venne help propel SJHL to wins at SJHL/MJHL Showcase

It was a great day for Melfort Mustangs to be represented at the SJHL/MJHL Showcase on Wednesday.

The SJHL won two of three games on the day, helping them win the two-day series four games to two.

In the early game on Wednesday, it was Team Gold for the SJHL taking on Team Black of the SJHL. Team Gold featured seven Mustangs, and on this day, it was Dawson Leroux who made the most noise, scoring twice in the team’s 6-0 win.

“It was good, my line was really good today, we were snapping it around pretty good,” Leroux said. “I was able to finish a couple so it was nice.”

Leroux played both nights with Mustangs teammates Ryan Duguay and Ben Tkachuk who each had two assists on the game as well.

Defencemen Leyton Holoien, Hayden Tuba, Leith Olafson, and Kevin Minnoch all had some chances as well and played strong defence for Team Gold.

After the SJHL’s team White fell to Team Red of the MJHL, it was up to the young kids of Team Blue to get the SJHL their fourth win of the week and take the series.

After serving as backup for Tuesday’s game, James Venne got the call for Team Blue and he shined in his lone game of the tournament. The 18-year-old stopped 28 shots through two periods and didn’t allow a goal until the third period. He ultimately stopped 34 of 36 in the win, helping him earn Player of the Game honours as well.

“I was really dialed,” Venne said. “Felt good, team did a great job of shutting down entries and picking up sticks on loose pucks, but it felt good to just play hockey.”

Zac Somers earned one assist for Team Blue in the game, while Riley Ashe was held off the scoresheet but played well in various situations for the young squad.
