Tkachuk takes home SJHL MVP for the month of January

Melfort Mustangs’ captain Ben Tkachuk, was arguably the perfect teammate anyone could ask for in the month of January. The 20-year-old seemed to set up his teammates every time he touched the puck.

The Gronlid, Sask. product, played in all 10 games for the Green and Blue, this past month, as he racked up 20 points, which included four goals and an astonishing 16 assists, giving him a two-points-per-game average.

Because of his performance, he has earned the SJHL’s SGEU MVP of the Month award.

The 2002-born forward was the final SGEU MVP of the Week in January and is now up to nine goals and 34 assists in 31 games this season, which puts him in the top 10 in Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League scoring.

Tkachuk was only held pointless twice in January and had six multi-point efforts.

Two of his best performances came on Jan. 13 against the Humboldt Broncos, where he had five helpers, and on Jan. 24 against the Flin Flon Bombers, where he scored twice and added two apples.

The University of Saskatchewan commit is currently riding a six-game point streak into the month of February, coming off an appearance at the SJHL/MJHL Showcase.

Melfort went 6-3-0-1 in the month of January, giving them 13 out of a possible 20 points.

The organization currently sits in fifth place in the league, however, are just five points back of second, with three games in hand.

They will travel to Battlefords and Kindersley this Saturday and Sunday, for their first games back from the break.
