Hawks give up late goal in fourth straight loss

The Nipawin Hawks fell 2-1 in Notre Dame Thursday losing its fourth straight game as they see their once secure seventh-place in the SJHL standings dwindle to a pair of points.

At one point in January, the Hawks were nine points ahead of the eighth-place Weyburn Red Wings, who are now just two points behind the Hawks. Nipawin head coach Tad Kozun wasn’t pleased with his clubs’ effort in Wilcox as the Hawks begin a three-game road swing.

“I didn’t think we were that great tonight,” he said on the postgame show of Rona Nipawin Hawks Hockey. “That first period— if it wasn’t for Fells [Jackson Fellner, Hawks goaltender] in net that game could have gotten ugly quick.”

The first period ended 0-0 despite the Hounds’ 18 shots on the Nipawin net.

The Hawks opened the scoring on a power play in the second period, Braxton Buckberger scored his 19th goal of the season giving the visitors the lead. It was short-lived as three minutes later the Hounds knotted the game at 1-1.

The score stood until just three minutes remained in regulation when Kyle Kalamaras jumped on a rebound in front of Fellner for the game-winning goal. Kozun said after a seven-win January the team is looking for answers.

“I get we had a good January, but nothing is safe in this league. Everybody else is trying to catch us too so it’s one of those things we’ve got to get back to work and we have to find it fast,” Kozun steamed.

The Hawks appeared to score and tie the game in the final minute during their sixth power-play of the game, but after the puck crossed the line the official emphatically waved off the goal saying Nipawin put the puck in with a glove. Kozun admitted it was tough for him to see from the bench, but his players were incensed.

“We didn’t control our emotions after that and let it get the best of us. There was still lots of time on the clock to score another one there but we just kind of let it get away from us there,” he added.

The Hawks finished with one power-play goal in six chances. Nipawin was just one for 20 on the man advantage in the season series with Notre Dame who sports the SJHL’s worst penalty-killing group this season. Coincidently the Hounds won three of four games.

The Hawks are in Estevan for a meeting with the Bruins Friday. Estevan is just four points ahead of the Hawks for sixth place. Kozun said the team needs to regroup and prepare to continue to salvage the road trip.

“We have to move past tonight, we have to get our emotions back in check, we’ve got to get a good rest. The sun is going to come up tomorrow, we have to play another hockey game. We have to be ready to go,” Kozun concluded.

Face-off from Affinity Place is 7 p.m., and the pregame show of Rona Nipawin Hawks Hockey will start at 6:45 p.m.
