Raiders claim seesaw victory over Pats

PRINCE ALBERT, SK – It was a high scoring affair in the Art Hauser on Friday when the Prince Albert Raiders edged the Regina Pats 6-5.

The win is the second in a row for the Raiders where they toppled the Swift Current Broncos 4-1 on Saturday.

When asked about how the crowd was in the arena, head coach Jeff Truitt said he couldn’t believe it.

“It was unreal,” he said. “You heard it earlier on right around warmups when (the fans) started coming in, you knew it was going to be electric. You’re standing out there for the national anthem and you see every seat filled, you really get into it. Once we got that first goal, it really got alive and you could hear the cheering as the game went on and I think they provided a lot of motivation for us.”

Rookie Grady Martin got his first career goal in the game where he said it was a dream come true.

“It means a lot,” he said. “Going in and out of the lineup, you just got to be patient with your process and the goals will come and hopefully there’s more.”

“I was so full of joy,” he continued. “It feels good to get that monkey off your back.”

Alongside Martin, Brayden Dube, Carter Anderson, and Keaton Sorensen also scored while Aiden Oiring and Ryder Ritchie both had a goal and an assist. Landon Kosior led in the assist category with two while Justice Christensen, Easton Kovacs, Owen Boucher, Sloan Stanick, Niall Crocker, and Harrison Lodewyk each had one.

Connor Bedard hit the 100-point milestone for the second time in his career with two goals and two assists. Alexander Suzdalev had a pair of markers, while Prince Albert’s own Tanner Howe also found the back of the net. Stanislav Svozil had two assists while Tye Spencer, Borya Valis, Tanner Brown, and Parker Berge each had one.

Max Hildebrand made 32 stops for the win where the Raiders improve to 21-28-3-0 on the campaign.

Regina goaltender Drew Sim turned aside 25 shots in the game as the Pats fall to 25-23-2-1 on the year.

COMPLETE BOX SCORE

The Raiders found themselves down by two after the first when Regina got off to a hot and flashy start. Less than five minutes in, Suzdalev got the puck below the PA goal line and managed to hit the Michigan-style goal to put the Pats up one.

Not too long after, the hometown kid Howe took a pass down low from Bedard to double the lead while on the powerplay.

The Raiders eventually found their footing with Boucher finding Dube all alone in close for the easy tap in on the far side of the net to shave into the Regina lead.

But the Pats had a response a short time later when Bedard had the puck below the goal line where he reached inside his bag of tricks and banked it off Hildebrand’s back where they then led 3-1 after the first.

The second period was all Prince Albert and they wasted no time getting to work. Anderson capitalized off a Regina defensive turnover and fired a backhand far side on an unsuspecting Pats netminder where it was now a one-goal game.

Three minutes later, the powerplay unit got their chance to shine when Ritchie tied it up off a rocket through the sea of bodies in front.

The Raiders weren’t done there as 90 seconds later, the powerplay unit struck again. Ritchie connected with Sorensen on the short side to give PA the lead.

Fast forward to the later moments of the game and Bedard does it again. The 17-year-old phenom tallied his 50th goal of the year to tie the game at four heading into the third.

Prince Albert began the final frame on a five-on-three penalty kill and the Pats powerplay went to work with Suzdalev netting his second of the night to help Regina regain the lead.

The back-and-forth battle continued just moments later when Christensen’s point shot was stopped, but Martin was there to put home his first career marker to tie it up for PA.

The Raiders kept on trucking and the hard work paid off. Stanick drove the net hard, before feeding a drop pass to Oiring in the slot where he fired it into the open cage.

The Pats pulled Sim for the extra man, but they couldn’t pull through as the Raiders won 6-5.

Prince Albert now has a quick turnaround before their back on home ice Saturday when they welcome the Moose Jaw Warriors. Puck drop is at 7 p.m.
