Hawks’ comeback bid diffused by Bombers

The Nipawin Hawks were able to claw back and grab a point in an overtime loss last week, however that game plan versus the Flin Flon Bombers was disposed of in a 6-4 Hawks loss Tuesday.

In Nipawin’s first Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) action since a 6-5 overtime loss to the Kindersley on Valentine’s Day, the Hawks hosted Flin Flon for the final time this season.

The Bombers opened the scoring late in the first and added two more in the second to jump out to a 3-0 lead before the halfway point of the game. Nipawin responded in the middle period, Alex Ochitwa scored his 14th goal of the SJHL season, F.X. Bedard notched his ninth goal to close the gap to 3-2.

Flin Flon answered back restoring a two-goal cushion courtesy Noah Houle’s second goal of the game for the Bombers.

Trailing by a pair going to the third Carson Dobson scored back-to-back power-play goals to knot the game at 4-4 with 10 minutes to play. Flin Flon scored late in the third period to regain the lead again and added an empty net goal to cap the scoring. Dobson said giving up the game-winner late in regulation time was deflating.

“We know how tight the standings are right now and we’re battling for a playoff spot. Those are some points we’d really like to have and need at this time of year,” the 20-year-old forward said after scoring his 16th and 17th goals of the season.

The Hawks found themselves in penalty trouble in the second period giving the SJHL’s top-ranked powerplay team chances, the Bombers scored on their first two-man advantages before failing to score on their final two, the Hawks were more impressive on the power play, scoring three times in five opportunities. Dobson said special teams haven’t cost the team lately, a lack of full-game efforts has.

“We haven’t been going a full 60 minutes lately,” he admitted. “Our third periods have been pretty good, but our first and second periods haven’t been there for us lately and we have to figure that out.”

Nipawin finished with 26 shots on goal, former Hawk Harmon Laser-Hume stopped 22 shots in the win, Jackson Fellner made 17 saves in the loss for Nipawin.

The Hawks sit tied with the Weyburn Red Wings for seventh in the SJHL playoff race with 49 points. The clubs trail Estevan by four points for sixth, the Bruins have played two more games than both the Hawks and Weyburn.

Notre Dame is in ninth place, out of the playoff race with 40 points and a pair of games in hand on both the seventh-place teams.

The Hawks host Humboldt Friday and visit the Elgar Petersen Arena Saturday to close the season series with the Broncos.
