A group of Melfort residents have joined in the name of Truth and Reconciliation to share cultural learning and activities.

Melfort Reconciliation committee member Lori Constant told northeastNOW that the group started as a result of community interest.

“There had been talk for a long time, we should do something and then this fall we just decided let’s just throw it out there and let’s get a reconciliation group started.”

Since their first meeting in November, they have had two meetings with thirty people actively attending.

The group held its a beading class as held its first event earlier this month. Every participant got to go home with a handmade keychain.

The event was so popular that they are hosting a second round of beading on March 2 for those who didn’t get a chance to attend the first event.

The group has recently applied for provincial funding to help provide larger-scale events within the community.

With the high demand, Constant explained they have no plans to slow down.

“We are just getting started and just learning how to navigate the group. One of the things that we’re looking at right now is how can our group support events that are happening on June 21 in our community.”

Although they can’t reveal exact details yet for their National Indigenous Peoples Day celebration, Constant reminds the community to continue to follow the group for updates.

Although the group hosts events and meetings to foster reconciliation, the real work starts within yourself.

“I think that truth and reconciliation means for me personally, I am willing to listen, to acknowledge and I am willing to learn,” Constant continued. “I am willing to be an ally and to do what I can do to help my community, my family, my workplace.”

With the start of the group and members who are dedicated to making change, Constant said this is something that everyone can be proud to be a part of.

“We all have a role in reconciliation. There are so many people who want this and who are committed to walking the walk and doing the work. It’s exciting to be a part of it.”
