Mintos prepare for important weekend ahead of playoffs

Feb 24, 2023 | 4:55 PM

The Prince Albert Mintos are playoff bound in the SMU18AAHL and currently sit in the eighth seed; however, they are looking to move up in the standings after their busy weekend coming up.

As of Friday, the Mintos are set to play the Saskatoon Blazers in the first round. If they’re able to win the next three games, it could come as a massive boost to the squad and will boost them by six points in the standings. Prince Albert currently sits three points back of seventh-place Hounds, four points back of sixth-place Wildcats, and five points back of fifth-place Warriors.

An updated look at the SMAAAHL standings ahead of this weekend.

P.A. is set to play the Wildcats on Friday night in Warman before coming home to play host to Notre Dame on Sunday and the Contacts on Monday.

Friday’s matchup was meant to be played back on Nov. 5 but was postponed to a later date due to bad weather at the time. The contest will also be P.A.’s third time in four games that they will be squaring off with the Wildcats as they won the previous meetings 3-0 on Feb. 12 and 3-1 on Monday afternoon. The first time these clubs met this season was back on Dec. 18 when Warman steamrolled the Mintos 7-0. Friday’s matchup is set for 8 p.m. at the Warman Home Centre Communiplex.

After tonight’s game, the Green and Gold gets set to welcome the Notre Dame Hounds to the Art Hauser Centre for a Sunday matinee. Home ice seems to play a big factor in the season series as the home team has won every time thus far as the Hounds lead the series 2-1. The Mintos only win versus Notre Dame happened at the beginning of the season when Abinet Klassen was the overtime hero to lift PA to a 4-3 win at home. The losses came in Wilcox by 3-1, and 3-0 defeats. The season finale with the Hounds happens on Sunday afternoon at the Hauser with puck drop at 1:30pm.

It will be a quick turnaround for Prince Albert afterward as they’ll get set to host the Saskatoon Contacts in their regular season finale. Similar to their record against the Hounds, the Mintos have only managed to beat the Contacts in extras, coming off a 2-1 shootout win back on Feb. 1. The other matchups ended in decisive 4-2 and 5-0 wins for Saskatoon. As for the Contacts in the playoff picture, they’re currently in third and are set to face the sixth-seed Wildcats in round one with two games remaining on the schedule.

The round one playoff schedule for the Mintos will be released early next month.
