Hawks bolster blueline with signing of defenseman

The Nipawin Hawks have recruited defenseman Brynn MacLean from Sherwood Park, Alta.

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) club will welcome the 17-year-old blueliner next season. He put up four goals and 21 assists in 38 games this season with the AAA Under-18 Fort Saskatchewan Rangers program. Nipawin Associate General Manager Dana Dirks said Maclean has all the tools to be a top pairing junior ‘A’ rearguard.

“He plays a lot of minutes, top pairing defenseman, comes in at six-foot-three, 180 pounds right now, probably projects out at 195 pounds or so with his frame,” Dirks said after watching MacLean play several times this season.

MacLean added a goal and an assist in two playoff games this year. He is currently skating with the Spruce Grove Saints of the Alberta Junior Hockey League. Dirks has spoken with the staff of the top-end program, that fortunately for the Hawks, doesn’t have room for MacLean next year as a 2005-born player.

“If he is that close to cracking their lineup then I think he’ll be a great fit for us,” Dirks said.

Dirks isn’t one to compare players at the level of Junior ‘A,’ but he admitted MacLean brings a similar game to the Hawks that 2022-23 SJHL Defenseman of the Year nominee Zander Stewart provides.

“There is a lot of similarities there— obviously with skating, a left shot, leaner body, makes a real good first pass which is key, especially in a rink like ours,” Dirks added.

MacLean is expected to join other Nipawin prospects and attendees at the Hawks’ Spring Showcase from April 14 to 16 at the Centennial Arena.

The Hawks open the playoffs on Friday in Humboldt against the Broncos. The entire series will be broadcasted on 750 Beach Radio. Game two is Saturday, face-off is 7:30 p.m. both nights.

Games 3 and 4 will be at the ‘Cage’ on March 21 and 22 stating at 7 p.m.
