Mar 24, 2023 | 4:20 PM

The Tri-Community Celebration comes to an end Saturday with a free concert open to all residents.

The masters of ceremony for the concert, which will occur at the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre (JRMCC) from noon to 10 p.m., are Howie Miller and Conway Kootenay.

Entertainment, in order of appearance, are the Northern Boys Drum Group, LJ Tyson and The Locals, Its Just Andrea, Chubby Cree, Poe Lacey, Northwind Band, Tristen Durocher, Donny Parenteau, Jake Vaadeland and The Sturgeon River Boys, Lancelot Knight, Whitehorse and William Prince.

“Come on out and enjoy the music we will have there,” said project coordinator Michael Fraser. “We have a full day of musicians and artists and some excellent MCs to have with us that day.”

From 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., there will also be food vendors serving up ethnic cuisine including Ella’s Kitchen and the Filipino community, Lavish Pizza (Indian), bannock and stew (First Nations) by JRMCC staff, and Marker 47 Café (Lebanese). While the concert is free, there will be a cost associated with food items.

The event will conclude at 10 p.m. with fireworks at the JRMCC.

The Tri-Community Celebration began Tuesday and, throughout the week, square dancers and powwow dancers visited all schools in the area. There were also children’s activities in Patterson Park, a round dance at the JRMCC on Thursday and an Elder’s bingo on Friday.

“Things are going to plan,” Fraser said. “We have been fortunate to be able to deliver all the things on schedule with little to no huge problems that have come up. I am very happy with the way things are going.”

The events are supported by Air Ronge, La Ronge and the Lac La Ronge Indian Band. The Tri-Community Celebration is being funded in part by the Government of Canada through a $285,000 contribution from the Commemorate Canada Reopening Fund.

Later this year, three commemorative murals will also be installed in the tri-communities as part of the celebration. The murals will reflect the diverse community, invite interaction, foster civic identity and community pride, reflect the local natural and cultural history, inspires a sense of discovery, and stimulates cultural awareness.

The Town of La Ronge was accepting proposals for the $40,000 project until Feb. 6, and local artist Donna Langhorne has been awarded the contract.
