Battleford Legion Branch #9 plans celebration for King’s Coronation

May 2, 2023 | 12:52 PM

People in the town of Battleford will be able to join in the local celebration for the King Charles III Coronation this Saturday.

The commemorative ceremony will take place at Battleford Gazebo Park, at the corner of 22nd Street and Second Avenue West, across from the Battleford Post Office.

Royal Canadian Legion Branch #9 Battleford vice-president Tim Popp believes the ceremony will be an opportune way to mark this historic occasion.

“It’s a nice thing to do in honour of the King,” Popp said. ‘He is our Head of State now. It’s a [good] way to preserve our history and heritage in Canada.”

Attendees are asked to convene promptly at 1:15 p.m., and to bring their own lawn chair if they hope to sit down for the event. People will be able to view the proceedings from Second Avenue West.

During the ceremony, the Sergeant-at-Arms will come forth to march on the colours. Popp and invited dignitaries, Battlefords-Lloydminster MP Rosemarie Falk, Battlefords MLA Jeremy Cockrill, First Nations representative Mosquito, Grizzly Bear’s Head, Lean Man First Nation Chief Tanya Aguilar-Antiman, Battleford Mayor Ames Leslie, North Battleford Mayor David Gillan, and Battleford Legion president Esther Delainey, will each say a few words to recognize the occasion.

Then, Legion bagpiper Lynda Lyon-Walls will perform an original tune she composed for the ceremony.

Piper Jim Ramsay will also perform.

After that, trumpeter Mike Reid will play a selected tune called Majesty.

Popp mentioned this song was written for the 70th anniversary of the accession of Queen Elizabeth II at the Platinum Jubilee in June of 2022.

The Battleford ceremony is expected to last about half an hour, and will conclude with the singing of God Save the King.

After the event, everyone is invited to come to the Battleford Legion Hall at 262-22 Street for coffee and dainties.
