Walk for MMIWG gives support to families

May 30, 2023 | 5:28 PM

Families and supporters took to the streets of North Battleford Tuesday for a walk to honour Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, and 2-Spirit people (MMIWG2S).

The walk was organized by Battle River Treaty 6 Health Centre (BRT6HC), the Battlefords Indian and Métis Friendship Centre, and Catholic Family Services of the Battlefords.

BRT6HC community wellness coordinator Sherri Poitras said the walk was held on Tuesday because some participants were taking part in other walks on May 5, National Red Dress Day.

The three agencies decided to jointly have their own day of recognition for the MMIWG cause.

“You can recognize Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women any day of the year,” Poitras said. “This is to address awareness. Some have been found, but some haven’t – such as Ashley Morin. And it’s for prevention – we need to show our community members that Indigenous people matter.”

Ashley Morin’s mother, Diane and Ashley’s grandmother, Sylvia Arcand along with Megan Gallagher’s father, Brian, were among those participating in the event.

Mike Bird, a cousin of missing North Battleford woman Ashley Morin said the Morin family still hope to see Ashley return.

“Ashley is still missing,” he said. “It’s been five years now. She was last seen on July 10, 2018, here in North Battleford. Ever since then, we’ve been looking, and trying to get the RCMP involved. Someone knows something. I encourage them to come forward and let the RCMP know. We just want Ashley home, as a family.”

The family of murdered Saskatoon woman Megan Gallagher took part in the walk. Gallagher’s remains were discovered in September of 2022 after she was reported missing two years before that.

Brian Gallagher, Megan’s father, hopes the walk helps families like his, as well as the Morin family, and others going through the same tragedy.

“Building community, [with] so many people out here, and breaking the silence – both of those have so much power and potential to ease so much pain for so many families,” he said.
