Man responsible for city-wide power outage, receives prison sentence and $25,000 restitution order

An incident in Prince Albert last fall involving a truck slamming into a power pole, and subsequently knocking out power to the entire city, has resulted in a 30-month prison sentence.

Timothy Iron, 37, who appeared in person Tuesday at Provincial Court, has also been ordered to pay SaskPower over $25,000.

Guilty pleas were entered last April to two counts of mischief, and one count of uttering threats. The mischief charges related to interference with property and causing someone harm; as well as damage to the power pole.

On the day of the offence last November, Iron was the passenger in the truck and had just been picked up from the hospital by his now ex-wife.

After being handed divorce papers, Iron grabbed the steering wheel and claimed he would kill them both.

Iron’s total prison sentence will actually be 42 months, minus 305 days for remand credit. In addition to the power pole incident, he had also previously entered guilty pleas to assault and robbery.

These charges also related to the same victim and as per discussion heard in court, there was a long history of abuse during the 19-year relationship.

Noting his client’s family support, intentions to work and stay on a sober path, Iron’s lawyer Tim Nolan was seeking a sentence that would combine 10 months jail and two years in the community.

Judge Healey rejected the proposal and noting Iron’s past history of 39 breaches, added he had no confidence Iron could be safely managed in the community.

Healey explained a longer sentence in prison would give Iron time to seek treatment and reflect on what he had done.

“A wake up call is long overdue,” he said.

When given the opportunity to speak, Iron apologized for his actions and said now that he had come to terms with his marriage being over, he was ready to move on.

He also promised to never be in court again.
