Thousands pack P.A.’s downtown for Street Fair

Driving in downtown Prince Albert was tough this weekend.

That’s because the Prince Albert Downtown Business Improvement District (PADBID) held its annual Street Fair which took over Central Avenue.

In past years, around 15,000 people have attended, and it’s believed this year was no different.

“I was overwhelmed with the amount of people that came. I was so pleased to see so many families out and about,” said Rhonda Trusty, executive director of PADBID.

Trusty added this year’s fair had just about everything. This included a classic car show, a farmer’s market, art demonstrations, and more.

First the first time, a cultural village was set up along River Street with the Prince Albert Grand Council (PAGC) looking after it.

“(They) had made it bigger than I had originally intended,” Trusty joked.

Another unique aspect of this year’s fair was the chance to get a free tree. The Prince Albert Nursery, with help from Power 99, handed out around 11,000 saplings with some going as far away as Wakaw. This was an annual initiative by the nursery; however, it was postponed for three years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

It’s too early to tell what the economic impacts of the event will be on the downtown core.

Whatever it ends up being, Trusty explained it was a success as the main goal was to get people in the area and highlight what it has to offer.

“It’s about trying to showcase the beauty and the diversity of our downtown,” said Trusty. “We have six art galleries in our downtown, we have longstanding businesses in our downtown, and the historical museum at the end of River Street is just a wonderful addition.”

Meanwhile, Trusty thanked everyone who helped make the street fair a success.

This includes the vendors, sponsors, and the City of Prince Albert.
