A trial date has now been secured for the first person charged after human remains were found inside a burnt-out home in Prince Albert.

Loretta Sakebow is accused of committing second-degree murder in the death of Jeremy Starblanket.

She will be tried by judge and jury beginning the week of Oct. 3. A pre-trial conference on Friday allotted two weeks for the trial.

The homicide case dates back to March 20, 2021, when residents in the 500 block of Fifth St. E., reported hearing an explosion and several popping sounds, then saw a bunch of black smoke coming from a house.

The single-family bungalow was found fully engulfed when fire crews arrived. During the investigation, Starblanket’s body was found in the remains of the home.

Following Sakebow’s arrest, three other people were charged. Darren Masuskapoe, Henry Ratt and Keyano Ahenakew all have pending court dates.

Following his son’s death, Starblanket’s father recalled for paNOW the last conversation he had with his son when he picked him up from jail.

“He had talked about wanting to straighten his life out, to try and make amends with some people he had stirred up trouble with,” the father said.
