SMVS celebrates 2023 graduating class

It’s a special day for 23 graduates of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band’s (LLRIB) Senator Myles Venne School (SMVS).

A graduation ceremony was held Wednesday at the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre. It included speeches by LLRIB Chief Tammy Cook-Searson, Prince Albert Grand Council (PAGC) Grand Chief Brian Hardlotte, PAGC Education representative Ed Merasty, LLRIB Education representative Roger Ratt, SMVS Principal Dale Ahenakew and NDP Cumberland Consistency representative Jude Ratt.

In his speech, Ahenakew told the crowd it was an emotional day for himself and the school’s staff. He explained they were proud of the graduates, having watched them grow as people during the last several years.

“At SMVS, we call our school a family,” Ahenakew said. “We are SMVS family.”

This year’s valedictorians are Caitlyn Knutson and Margrett Charles. In their speech, they congratulated their fellow graduates and thanked Elders, teachers, parents, guardians and family members for helping shape who they are today.

On behalf of the graduating class, they thanked the attendees for coming to celebrate their achievements and dedication as they move into the next chapter of their lives.

The 2023 SMVS graduating class includes Thane Bird, Margrett Charles, Paris Charles, Skyler Cook, Davis Fitch, Caitlyn Knutson, Jordan McAuley, Leticia Mirasty, Robyn Okemau, Angel Ratt, Gabriel Ratt and Joel Ratt.

Keith Ratt, Syris Ratt, Timothy Ratt, Ariel Roberts, Chaz Roberts, Cortelle Roberts, Cortez Roberts, Paige Roberts, Tia Roberts, Kaydence Ross-Ratt and Riel Runningaround.
