Significant rainfall expected in La Ronge in coming days

Jul 24, 2023 | 5:27 PM

A significant amount of rain is expected in La Ronge over the few days.

That’s according to Environment Canada meteorologist Samantha Mauti, who said La Ronge could receive more than 50 millimetres of rain by Thursday afternoon. She explained there’s a highly convective frontal system moving through northern Saskatchewan until Thursday.

Frontal systems form due to the clash of opposing warm and cold air masses.

“It’s going to be very convective, so it depends on where those thunderstorms end up occurring and, if they are slow-moving, there will be a risk of receiving higher rain amounts,” Mauti said.

“It doesn’t look like there’s a lot of system rain associated with this, so until the end of Thursday, because it is looking convective with several embedded thunderstorms in this system, it is possible some areas could see 15-25 mm until Thursday afternoon with locally higher amounts embedded in there.”

Environment Canada is forecasting a 30 per cent chance of rain on Monday and Tuesday with showers expected on Wednesday. There’s a risk of a thunderstorm developing this evening and throughout Tuesday. By Thursday, there will be a mix of sun and cloud until Sunday.

The temperature is expected to reach 27 C on Monday, 24 C on Tuesday, 18 C on Wednesday, 19 C on Thursday and 20 C on Friday. The temperature on Saturday and Sunday is expected to reach 25 C.

“It’s possible the wind could get high,” Mauti said about the next few days. “Right now, our thunderstorm outlook for today and into tomorrow, it’s looking like a possibility some of these wind gusts could get up to 90 kilometres per hour.”

Mauti encourages residents to check in with Environment Canada for any watches or warnings over the next few days.
