Town, Co-op team up to bring Movie in the Park

Aug 10, 2023 | 5:00 PM

The Town of La Ronge and Lake Country Co-op are partnering to offer a Movie in the Park event next week.

“The town and Lake Country Co-op partnered last fall for a drive-in movie in the Co-op Food Store parking lot – and it was a huge success,” explained community services manager Connor Tessier.

The Movie in the Park event, which will be a screening of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, will take place on Aug. 15 in Patterson Park. Entry begins at 8 p.m. with showtime at 8:45 p.m.

Tessier noted the movie is rated PG (parental guidance suggested), so it is appropriate for a free, open-viewing experience. He added it is also a trending film this summer and a lot of people want to see it.

“The Town and the Co-op have shared contributions for the broadcasting equipment, movie licence, coordinating volunteer support, community outreach and advertising,” Tessier said.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is 92 minutes and it includes an ensemble voice cast with Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen, and Fred Armisen. It was released in theatres in April 2023 and it is a computer-animated adventure comedy film.

There is no capacity limit for the showing, but if it is rainy, the event will be held at the curling rink area at the Mel Hegland Uniplex. There will be free popcorn, as well as food trucks for those wanting to purchase additional food or snacks.

“We wanted to put something on together that everyone can enjoy, regardless of if they have access to a vehicle,” Tessier mentioned about the change from the event being drive-in style in 2022.

“We wanted to highlight our beautiful park, and make this event as accessible as possible to our community.”
