The Melfort Public Library wrapped up its annual summer reading program which beat last year’s record for participation.

Every summer, the library encourages young kids to sign up for the summer reading program to enjoy literacy-based activities and prevent the ‘summer slide’ in literacy levels.

Head Librarian Rene Chambers told northeastNOW that the turnout this year was great.

“This year, the kids read a total of 6,410 books, up by over 300 from last year,” she said.

More than 300 kids registered for the program and 190 participants returned at least one book log.

Some of the events the youth participated in included coding classes, fire safety presentations, grab-and-go crafts, Lego challenges, and a visit to the Saskatchewan Science Centre.

The wind-up party for the program allowed youth to interact and learn about reptiles with the Adventure Wrangler Reptile Show. Different animals slithered through the crowd including snakes, a bearded dragon, an iguana, a tortoise, and a tarantula.

Chambers added that the library also offers many other programs to engage families throughout the year.

“The programs we offer are important in promoting literacy, especially in early childhood,” Chambers continued. “Reading and storytelling with babies and children promotes brain development, imagination, language and learning.”
